TS ROYALIST is the Sea Cadets flagship, a training brig that takes twenty-four cadets to sea for six day voyages. The vessel was designed by Acubens, built during 2014 / 2015 at the Spanish shipyard of Astilleros Gondan. The Princess Royal officially named the Marine Society and Sea Cadets’ flagship, TS ROYALIST.
In 2009 the 24 metre long power vessel was named in a special ceremony by Jack Petchey CBE joining its sister ship ‘T.S. John Jerwood’.
The ship has 16 berths and will train 16,000 young people over an anticipated lifespan of 25 years. ‘T.S. Jack Petchey’ became fully operational in April 2010, and took to the seas after celebrations alongside Tower Bridge and St Katharine Docks on the River Thames.
The ship allows young people to experience sea training on board a modern power vessel. They learn navigation, bridge team duties, seamanship, deck work, engineering, cooking/ stewarding plus experience all the duties needed to operate a vessel at sea. All of this takes place on the coastal waters of the UK and Europe.
The Marine Society & Sea Cadets now have six vessels as part of its off shore fleet. Each year the charity takes 1,500 young people to sea, where they can put in to practice the sailing skills and team work spirit they have learnt at their local units.
The Jack Petchey Foundation is delighted to have contributed to such a lasting legacy for all cadets. The team working skills, self-discipline and experience gained from the voyages of the ‘T.S. Jack Petchey’ will stand the cadets in good stead for later life.
