Members and Guests met for tea and coffee at 7.30 in the morning upstairs at Vaughans Bistro and Bar, enjoying the wonderful views over the harbour. Judging by the the volume of discussion it was obvious there was a great deal of catching up and networking to be done.
Once again an excellent breakfast was served and after everybody had eaten Chamber President Andrew Knowles welcomed the many attendees. Andrew highlighted the forthcoming new Weymouth and Portland Chamber Service Trade And Retail (STAR) Awards presentation night on Friday October 19th. This prestigious and glamorous night has sponsors and guests lined up with 120 people expected to attend.
Battens were the sponsors for this well attended event and Jon Dobson, Senior Associate, presented on the strong future and commitment for Battens working in Weymouth and Portland despite the closure of their office in the town. He also emphasised their most welcome eagerness to support the Chamber.
Jon went on to give details on the Battens Charitable Trust, set up in 1985, to enable grants to be made to registered charities and for charitable purposes. Over the last five years they have provided more than £300,000 in support of many diverse beneficiaries. Funds are raised through legacies and donations and the Trust is run for free by Battens.
To emphasise his point a cheque was then presented to Richard Sloane, Chairman of the West Dorset Motor Neurone Disease Society. The money had been raised by Battens at their Beach Volleyball Competition this summer and the event sponsor, Spirare Ltd, had suggested this charity.
The breakfast meeting concluded with a presentation from Kerry Carpenter, marketing and PR coordinator from Dorset County Council on the advertising opportunities open to businesses. These range from roundabout and bus shelter sponsorship to Bin lid adverts and much more in an effort by the council in raising money.
President Andrew closed the meeting by reminding everyone to book for the next breakfast on November 6th at Nothe Fort with sponsors Albert Goodman Financial Consultants presenting.
